Keyword research is finding the words people type (or speak) when they look for what you sell. Good research means you write pages people are already searching for, instead of guessing.
Start with your customers
List the questions customers ask you on calls and WhatsApp. For a web design business that might be "how much does a website cost", "website designer near me" or "do I need a website for my shop".
Understand search intent
Every keyword has a goal behind it:
- Informational — "what is responsive design" → a blog guide
- Commercial — "best web design agency for small business" → comparison or service page
- Transactional — "hire affordable website developer" → service or pricing page
- Local — "web designer in Pune" → location-focused page
Match the page type to the intent, or it won't rank.
Find keyword ideas
- Google autocomplete and "People also ask"
- Related searches at the bottom of results
- Google Search Console queries you already appear for
- Keyword tools for volume and difficulty estimates
Prefer long-tail keywords
Short terms like "web design" are extremely competitive. Longer phrases like "affordable website design for clinics" have fewer searches but clearer intent and are far easier to win.
Map keywords to pages
Give each important keyword one main page. Two pages targeting the same phrase compete with each other. Put the keyword naturally in the title, first paragraph, one heading and the URL.
Summary
Listen to customers, match intent, favour specific long-tail phrases and give each one a dedicated page. That's the foundation of SEO that brings enquiries.
