Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): How to Get Your Business Cited by AI Search

A plain-English guide to Generative Engine Optimization: how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews choose which websites to mention, and what small businesses can do about it.

Search is no longer just ten blue links. People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews questions like "who is a good affordable website designer near me?" and get a written answer. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your website easy for those AI systems to understand, trust and cite.

How AI search engines pick sources

Most AI assistants combine a language model with live web results. When someone asks a question, the system searches, reads a handful of pages and summarises them. Your page is more likely to be used when it:

  • Answers the question directly near the top of the page
  • Is crawlable and loads quickly
  • Clearly states who you are, what you do and where you work
  • Is consistent with what other sites say about you

GEO vs traditional SEO

GEO does not replace SEO — it builds on it. If Google cannot index your page, AI search usually cannot find it either. The difference is emphasis: GEO rewards clear, quotable answers and entity clarity (the AI must be sure your business is a real, specific thing).

Practical steps for small businesses

  1. Write answer-first content. Start each article with a two or three sentence answer, then explain.
  2. Use question-style headings that match how people actually ask, e.g. "How much does a business website cost?"
  3. Add structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Article) so machines can read your details.
  4. Keep your name, contact details and services identical across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
  5. Allow reputable AI crawlers in robots.txt unless you have a reason to block them.
  6. Publish genuine expertise — real examples, real prices, real processes. Generic text is rarely cited.

Measuring results

There is no "rank tracker" for AI answers yet. Test manually: ask several assistants questions your customers would ask and note whether your business appears. Track referral visits from chat tools in your analytics.

Summary

GEO is about being the clearest, most trustworthy answer on the web for your topic. Strong technical SEO, honest specific content and consistent business information give you the best chance of being mentioned by AI search.
